Building Blocks

The BOTTLE^™ Building Blocks Task focuses on developing biological and chemical routes to convert biomass and deconstructed plastics to monomers for performance-advantaged polymers, spanning the gram to kilogram scales. This task bridges the Deconstruction and Redesign Tasks. Below are exemplary projects for each of our primary focus areas.

Synthesis of New Building Blocks for Performance-Advantaged Polymers

• Oxidation of hydrogenolysis products
• Bioconversion of oxidation-derived intermediates to performance-advantaged polymer building blocks
• Chemo-catalytic synthesis of substituted lactones.

Scale-Up of Building Blocks Syntheses for Performance-Advantaged Polymers

• Scaling selected monomer syntheses to the 1-kilogram scale
• Process R&D and scale-up.
